Media won't get early look at "90210"

By Kimberly Nordyke

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Critics and other members of the media hoping to get a sneak peek at the CW's upcoming series "90210" are out of luck.

The network and producing studio issued a statement Monday saying they won't be sending out DVDs of the highly anticipated show before its September 2 premiere.

"The CW and our studio partner CBS Paramount Network Television have made the strategic marketing decision not to screen '90210' for any media in advance of its premiere," the statement said. "We're not hiding anything -- simply keeping a lid on '90210' until 9.02, riding the curiosity and anticipation into premiere night and letting all our constituents see it at the same time."

The statement set the blog world into a frenzy of speculation about the quality of the show, a contemporary version of Fox's long-running "Beverly Hills, 90210."

Applegate cancer free after surgery

Applegate cancer free after surgery

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Samantha Who?" star Christina Applegate, 36, is free of cancer after having both breasts removed to combat the disease, the actress told a U.S. television news show on Tuesday.

Applegate, who revealed her diagnosis for breast cancer earlier this month, had the double mastectomy performed a month after her diagnosis, she said on ABC's "Good Morning America."

The actress, who stars in U.S. television network ABC sitcom "Samantha Who?," said she bore a genetic risk for developing breast cancer, and she said her surgery was meant to prevent the cancer she suffered in one breast from coming back. But she said it was difficult to have both breasts surgically removed.

"Sometimes, you know, I cry," Applegate said. "And sometimes I scream. And I get really angry. And I get really upset, you know, into wallowing in self-pity sometimes. And I think it's all part of the healing."

Applegate also talked about her mother, Nancy Priddy, who survived breast cancer and helped support the film and TV star in battling cancer.

"She's been sort of this quiet warrior in the back and has been a great support, and just telling me that I was going to be OK. And I knew I was going to be OK. I've watched her," Applegate said.

In the interview with ABC, Applegate said she will have reconstructive surgery on her breasts in coming months, and she showed fans that her sense of humour has remained intact.

"I'm going to have cute boobs 'til I'm 90," she said.

The California-born Applegate rose to fame playing a ditzy daughter on TV sitcom "Married ... With Children," and since then has starred in several movies and TV shows.

She won an Emmy, U.S. television's top honour, for a guest role on "Friends," and was Emmy-nominated for "Samantha Who?" playing an amnesiac trying to put her life back together.

Applegate told "Good Morning America" she is starting a charitable foundation to help women meet the costs of MRI exams, which is how her disease was discovered.

The actress also will appear on upcoming TV fundraiser "Stand Up to Cancer" singing alongside Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Sheryl Crow, who also has battled breast cancer.

"Brangelina" babies unveiled on Web

Monday, Aug 04, 2008 1:32AM UTC

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The most famous babies on the planet, the latest spawn of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, made their world premiere on the Internet on Sunday, having outfoxed the paparazzi since they were born three weeks ago.

People magazine posted the cover of its upcoming issue, featuring twins Vivienne Marcheline and Knox Leon and their proud parents, on its Web site, a teaser for a 19-page spread that will hit newsstands on Monday.

All were dressed in white, and the babies had no distinguishing characteristics. A smaller photo in the corner showed the couple's 2-year-old daughter, Shiloh, holding her new sister.

In a blurb that accompanied the cover photo, Jolie was quoted as saying that the couple's family life at a sprawling French chateau was "chaos, but we are managing it and having a wonderful time."

In addition to the twins and Shiloh, the couple has three adopted children. Jolie, 33, and Pitt, 44, are one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples, dubbed "Brangelina" by the celebrity press. She gave birth to the twins in the French city of Nice. Hordes of paparazzi waited out the process, but were unable to penetrate the hospital's heavy security.

The shoot was conducted by photo agency Getty Images, with People acquiring North American rights to the photos, and British gossip magazine Hello! all other territories. The Pitts have said they will donate the proceeds to charity.

The sum involved has developed into an international guessing game. Rumoured price tags for Hollywood baby photos are often wildly inaccurate, and Radar magazine recently reported that celebrity publications are not above stoking the hype in order to boost newsstand sales and Web site traffic.

In the case of the Jolie-Pitt twins, an unsourced report claimed the worldwide rights sold for $14 million (7.1 million pounds), more than three times the rumoured $4.1 million deal for Shiloh's baby photos in 2006. People has said that the rumoured numbers for both deals, as well as those for other famous babies that have adorned its pages, are excessive. But it has declined to elaborate.

Victoria Beckham is descendant of comrade of Marx

Monday, Aug 04, 2008 10:32PM UTC

BERLIN (Reuters) - Pop singer Victoria Beckham is a descendant of a 19th century German communist who was close to Karl Marx, a German historian was quoted as saying on Monday.

Beckham, born Victoria Adams and now wife of football player David Beckham, is the great-great-great-granddaughter of revolutionary and artist Carl Heinrich Pfaender, said Hans Mueller, a historian from the southwestern city of Heilbronn.

Mueller told news agency ddp he had researched the life of Heilbronn native Pfaender, who lived from 1819 to 1876 and was a close associate of Marx and Friedrich Engels.

Pfaender took part in the failed revolution of 1848 and was forced to flee to London where he worked as a miniaturist and painter to make ends meet, he added.

"He certainly didn't get rich doing it," Mueller said. "His wife was buried in a pauper's grave."

The historian told ddp he was astonished to discover the link between a pioneer of the workers' movement and the pop star, and has contacted Beckham's mother Jacqueline.

He said she had confirmed his findings and promised to tell Victoria, who came to fame as "Posh Spice" in the Spice Girls.

Pfaender's brother Wilhelm was a choral singer who was also active in the revolution and emigrated to America in 1848, later becoming state treasurer in Minnesota, Mueller said.
